Press Release
A new staging of the particularly successful performance "QED" or "What Feynman proved" by Peter Parnell is attempted by "Saltibagkoi" and Giorgos Kotanidis at "Tholos" of the Cultural Centre "Hellenic Cosmos", due to the International Year of Astronomy and with the support of the Foundation of the Hellenic World.
The performance also includes images of the universe and digital representations of the movement of electrons and planets, which will be shown at "Tholos", the Virtual Reality Theatre of Hellenic Cosmos. It is worth noting that it is the first time a play is presented at "Tholos".
A distinguished man of science, the Nobel Prize winner physicist Richard Feynman (1918-1988), comes to life on the stage. Awarded with the Nobel Prize of Physics in 1965 for his work on Quantum Electo-Dynamics, from the initials of which comes the title of play "QED", Feynman was a multidimensional enchanting personality, who got involved with many fields of scientific creation, art and society. A man who maintained a brave attitude towards life, science, art and women. A man brave when facing authority and death. He was among the physicists who worked for the creation of the first atom bomb. Passionate drummer, amateur actor, creative painter, dreamer traveler, incurable ladies’ man, a hyperactive man. He clashed with the status quo of his period in the name of truth and fought conservatism with irony and humour.
A few words about the play
In his office Richard Feynman prepares a lecture entitled "All that we know". He explains us some of the mysteries of the universe and of the atom and talks about his experiences and his dreams, revealing fascinating events from his life.
A student of his, Miriam Field, besieges him and tries to learn secrets about the natural science and the universe. At some point he will reveal to her: "I've spent my life dancing and flirting with Nature, but she never let me lift her veil".
During that same night, he comes face to face with questions about life and death, since he has to make a significant decision: will he surrender to the cancer that inflicts him once again or he will undergo a surgery with a 50% chance of survival? A fight between logic and sentiment, between God and Nature, between truth and lies.
And when emotions overwhelm him, his contact with Field, his student, will remind him the joy of life and he will decide to fight.
